Universidad de Guanajuato

The foundation of the University of Guanajuato goes back to the year 1732. Since then, the university adopted several names, until March 1945, when the rank of University was acquired as well as the name for which is now known.

With a population of nearly 34,000 students, today, the University of Guanajuato is present in 12 cities within the entity through four campuses and one high school college with ten high schools.

Saturday August 8, 1972 premiered the play “Arsénico y encaje” (arsenic and lace) from Joseph Kasserling, directed by Enrique Ruelas, presented by the students from the University of Guanajuato, inscribed in the Dramatic Art degree. A year later, in February 1953 they present for he firs time in the “Entremeses Cervantinos”, origin of the “Festival Internacional Cervantino”

Since their creation all and each one of the represented plays have given great satisfaction to the public, however, the “entremeses” are magical because of their versatility in their content and characters, which throughout 57 years of uninterrupted presentations they still are of great interest for the public.

Indispensable minimum technical requirements:

  • The presentations of the University theater are subject to a previous technical analysis of the space.

  • Depends directly and totally from the audition dine by the director of the artistic group.

Rehearsals’ time and place:

Mondays to Thursdays from 20:00 to 22:00 hours, hall from the theater group “Batracio”, Mesón de San Antonio.

Born in April 10, 1982 and since then has had preference for comedy and farce; however, it has proven to be equally capable to put in scene theater plays with a social, moral and highly dramatic message.

The style of this group give more importance to acting than scenography, for such reason they have specialized in the handling the theater in circle, open plaza and formal theater.

A small background of this groups is: The group “Batracio”, wins the first place in the 1st Theater Biennial State with the play “The devil in the garden” from A. Licona, 1999. Other plays that stand out are “Grant smile change”, “Those from these side” from G. Alanis, “Vote for Sale”, “Viva Mexico”, “El grito de Dolor…es”, “Legends of Guanajuato”, “A mule for sale”, “Don Juan Jolgorio” (Farce since 1995), “El principito”, “The devil in the garden”, “Short stories to cure the bad mood”, “There is still too much alhóndiga to burn” (historic comedy).

The group “Batracio” presents two play per semester, giving opportunity to many of the new members to feel the theater experience on stage.

Indispensable minimum technical requirements:

  • Closed or open theater, plaza, patio or auditorium
  • Stage space: 12 x 10 m
  • Illumination: Ambient spotlights
  • Sound: equipment with CD player, 1 microphone.
  • Other: dressing rooms close to the presentation place, water.
  • Necessary transport to move costumes, props and members, besides the corresponding food.

Entry requirements:

  • 15 years old and older
  • Have coursed the theater workshop “Batracio” or have a two-year minimum experience.

Mondays to Thursdays from 18:00 to 20:00 hours. Mesón de San Antonio

Began in July 14, 1998 as an Acting workshop and in the second semester, with the most advanced, the group forms within the Direction of Cultural Extension from the University of Guanajuato. It strengthens in July 2001 with the theater montage “Canon”, exercise created by the Theater House of Master Luis de Tavira.

This group provides the basic necessary tools to continue studying in the acting, scenic direction and character creating careers among others. Among the most outstanding presentations of the group, there are: theater Canon, “The Dragon’s Spell” from Felipe de Jesús Ramírez, outstanding member of the acting group. “In search of the black pearl” from Juan Carlos García Díaz, member of the group that now writes scripts for movies. Pastorela angels, virtues and sins, collective creation from the group members and Silvana Santibañez. “The ghost from Canterville” adaptation from Oscar Wilde’s play and in recent dates, “The jealous babbler” and “The ridiculous precious”, from Moliére and “Another Day”, collective creation from members of the acting group.

*It is important to consider that the representation from the acting group, require particular specifications, depending on the play.
